Soothing Sundays: Bentonite Clay for Natural Hair and Skin

By JadoreBrittanie · December 5, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Got my Bentonite Clay in the mail the other day! Yay!! I'm excited. I've been hearing about it for a long time from curly friends, blog sites and hair forums but always overlooked it (just as I did Henna which is now the love of my hair life). I recently decided to try it and see if I'll fall in love with it as well. I typically pamper my hair and body on Sunday so its perfect that I try it out today.

In case you are like, "What is she talking about?" Bentonite Clay is packed with over 70 naturally occurring trace minerals that when mixed with water, swells and draws out dirt, oils, toxins and any other impurities like a sponge.

Mineral Content:
Silica- 61.4% - (required for strong healthy hair growth and skin tissue regeneration)
Aluminum- 18.1%
Iron- 3.5%
Sodium- 2.3%
Magnesium- 1.7%
Calcium- 0.04%
Titanium- 0.02%
Potassium- 0.01%
Moisture- 7.8%
pH - 8.3 - 9.1

  • Bentonite can be applied topically to skin and wounds or taken orally to draw toxins and impurities out of the body quickly. Bentonite Clay removes poisons (bacterial poisoning, salmonella, etc.) and intestinal parasites out of the intestinal tract while alkalizing the body.
  • Bentonite Clay is excellent to rejuvenate and cleanse the skin. Topical applications are helpful for acne, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, wound healing, and help draw poison from ant, bee, wasp, and similar bug stings and bites. It draws excess oils and debris to the surface, boosts circulation to tighten the skin and stimulate blood flow, and whisks away dead skin cells that can clog pores.
  • Bentonite is a swelling clay. When it is mixed with water, it rapidly swells open like a highly porous sponge. From here the toxins are drawn into the sponge through electrical attraction and once there, they are bound.
  • Bentonite Clay may also be used like a shampoo trapping and removing dirt, debris, build up and other particles from your hair and scalp.

I'm sure now you can see how this stuff may just end up being a glam girl's dream. I plan on using it for my skin as well as as a shampoo/treatment for my hair. I'll be making the mixture and applying as a hair mask tonight but won't do a full review until I have tried it a few times and so I can be sure that it really works or doesn't work consistently. I purchased a 1 lb container of the Now Foods brand clay from SwansonVitamins.com for $8.81.

Here are a few recipes for beauty treatments using BC <via Anita Grant>

" If you feel like pampering yourself here's a recipe for an Organic Watermelon & Bentonite Clay Body Wrap:

Prep time: 20 mins
Total time required for treatment: 45 min to an hour

What you'll need:
Strips of clean thin towels or sheets
Big Mixing bowl
2 Spoons

Tips:
Body wraps are messy so the best place to take the wrap is in the bath tub.

Drink at least 2 litres of water to get rid of all the toxins in your body.

Suggestion:
Have a warm shower before applying the body wrap as this will open your pores.

Instructions:
1. Take 473ml (2 cups) of hot Spring or Distilled water or an infusion of Apple Cider Vinegar and Organic Chamomile Flowers.
2. Add 59ml (1/4 cup) of Dead Sea Salt (Skin  tonic, detoxifying, nutrient enriched) and stir until the salt is dissolved.
3. Add 236 grams (1 cup) of Bentonite clay
4. To this add 29ml (2 tbsp) of Organic Watermelon
(absorbed into the skin, rich in Vitamin C and Omega 6 & 9 essential fatty acids (EFAs))
5. Stir to form a warm, wet paste.

Application:
Dip your strips of clean thin towels or sheets into the mix one by one making sure your mixture stays warm.
You may need to re-heat it if it cools down too quickly. Soak each strip in the mix then wrap it around your body start at your ankles and work your way up. It's important to keep warm, if your bathroom is a little chilly wrap yourself in a washable blanket lay in an empty bath and relax for at least 60 minutes.
After 60 minutes - rinse off in a warm shower. Your who body will tingle with delightful softness.

Treat yourself once a month to help keep your skin detoxified and smooth.

Bentonite Clay - Naturally Curly and Afro Curly Popping Hair Care Treatment:
This recipe depends on the length and thickness of your naturally curly hair.

Prep time: 10 mins

Instructions:
Mix 1 to 2 parts Bentonite clay
Slowly add *water to the clay until you achieve a pancake mix texture.
Apply to your hair (dry or wet)
Allow to set for between 15 - 20 minutes
Rinse thoroughly until it's all out of your curls, kinks and coils.

*water can be replaced with your choice of liquid for example:
Organic Coconut Milk
Herbal infusion
or anything you like...

Hair Care Benefits:
After you Shampoo
One single treatment of Bentonite Clay will remove build-up from your scalp leaving naturally curly and Afro hair clean and clear.

As a shampoo replacement
Bentonite Clay may also be used like a shampoo trapping and removing dirt, debris, build up and other particles from your hair and scalp.

Shaving tip:
Lightly dusting with Bentonite clay after shaving does soothe the area(s) & helps prevent the itchy after-rash some women (and blokes) have to contend with."

If you ladies try or already include these into your regimen, please gush about your results and experiences in the comments below. Thanks! Smooches :)

Red Carpet FAIL: Taraji Looked Amazing Except for.....

By JadoreBrittanie · January 7, 2010 · 4 Comments ·

..Those DREADFULLY large bags under her eyes. Her gown and hair were ultra fab but I those eyes had me humming "Bag Lady". I love me some Taraji P. Henson. Her acting is phenomenal and ,like many of you, I've been ridin' with her since Baby Boy. But it looks like Jody got his hands on her again but got her in both her eyes this time. Her eyes age her and take away from the rest of her flawless face. The Bag Lady syndrome is easily preventable (thats why its always a FAIL).

Lots of ladies have the same problem. The puffiness is fluid build up under the eyes that can come from the smallest things like eating overly salty foods, using anti-wrinkle creams under eyes too often, excess water or simply aging . Most celebs choose the needle as a cure but I have some tips and techniques that are way less painful, less expensive and more simple.

  • Refrigerate used teabags or soak teabags in chilled/ice water. Squeeze excess water from the bags and put them on your eyes. Leave them on your eyes for 15-10 minutes. The cold and caffiene help to shrink the baggage.
  • Splash cold water on your face after washing.
  • Apply a bag of cold peas or refridgerated, sliced cucumber over the eyes for 15  minutes.
  • Pop two spoons in the freezer then put the cold back of the spoon on your puffy areas.
  • Avoid drinking water right before bed or in the middle of the night.
  • Don't tug on your lower lid when applying eyeliner or other make-up.
  • Apply concealer that matches your skin as close as possible or a slighty darker one to make the area less noticeable.
  • GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP...lack of sleep is the most common reason for baggies.
  • Hemerroid ointment is a classic way to get rid of puffiness but the U.S. no longer makes it with the miracle ingredient that wisked away the baggies. Luckily, my girls in Canada and the UK can still utilize this old remedy though.

These tips should gradually get rid of or prevent this beauty offense. I never seem to get a full nights sleep so I'm constantly sitting around looking crazy as hell with some green tea bags on my eyes. lol Hopefully, someone forwards this post to my girl, Taraji or her make-up artist.

If any of you other ladies have had this problem, post your remedies or your questions. Toodles babes!!

Happy DIME Year Dolls!!!

By JadoreBrittanie · January 2, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Welcome to the Year of the Dime!!  Take advantage of this new beginning to out-do whatever you were doing last year. Be more sassy, more vivacious, more centered, more healthy, more fit, more driven, more sexy, more fierce, more kinky, coily, curly, more GLAM. Anything that you failed to do in '09, you can do now. All the bad hair days, emotional Big Chops and beauty struggles are so last year so lets make new, better hair and beauty memories.

So on that note, I want to share with you all my Dime Year Resolutions:

  1. I vow to get back to the shape and size I was back in my eye candy modeling days before I got married. I just realized that I'm almost in my mid-twenties so I want my body to be more banging than it has ever been.
  2. My hair is already APL (Arm Pit Length) and my hair grows fast so I think getting to BSL (Bra Strap Length) is very attainable. I just have to keep up my regimen of regular deep conditioning treatments and henna as well as resist my urge to cut my hair.
  3. By the end of the year, I want to have finished my novel and to have launched my natural cosmetic and bodycare line. My spouse gets on me all the time for putting off making my own products because it seems to be my calling.
  4. Need to break my coffee addiction. Its gonna be the hardest thing in the world.
  5. Lastly, Yoga and meditation need to become a daily part of my life again because it keeps me harmonious, stress-free and happy.

What was your New Year Resolution(s)? What are your hair/beauty goals for this year?

Glam or Slam?: Dr. Hauschka's Cleansing Milk Review

By JadoreBrittanie · December 29, 2009 · 0 Comments ·

Dr. Hauschka - Cleansing Milk         $36.95

A gentle cleanser and makeup remover. Soothing jojoba and almond oils combine with anthyllis extract to nourish the skin. Skin will feel pampered and velvety smooth.

Product Description: For all skin conditions, especially beneficial to sensitive skin.
Ideal for removing makeup, this gentle cleanser features fermented grain extract to remove dirt and impurities. Jojoba and sweet almond oils maintain the natural moisture balance, keeping dry, mature and sensitive skin soft and supple.

  • Fermented grain extract removes dirt and impurities
  • Bentonite clay soothes and cools irritation
  • Anthyllis extract tones and balances
  • Extra-mild daily cleanser for extremely sensitive skin conditions and an excellent shaving cream for men
  • Used as directed, Cleaning Milk lasts approximately 1 - 2 months

Ingredients: Water/Aqua, Alcohol, Anthyllis Vulneraria Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Glycerin,Fermented Grain Extract, Cetearyl Alcohol, Bentonite, Lecithin,Xanthan Gum, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Fragrance/Parfum (Essential Oil), Limonene, Geraniol, Linalool, Citronellol

Where To Purchase: Whole Foods (also has tons of samples and trial-sizes), DrHauschka.com, BeautyHabit.com, Smallflower.com or directly from the blog by clicking the image of the product.

Glam It Or Slam It: My skin is pretty finicky so I had mixed results when using it as a cleanser but I loved it as a make-up remover. Its light and non-greasy lotion-like consistency was surprisingly easy to use. The first time I washed with it, there was sort of a stinging feeling which I assume is from the fermented grain. After cleansing, my skin was smooth and didn't feel uncomfortably dry like most cleansers do. As a make-up artist, I say it is a must have cleanser for most skin types, even the acne prone. It can be quite irritating to the eyes and the ferment may be a bit strong for some so I recommend being careful.

As a make-up remover, this product can do no wrong. Make-up can be applied right after/over it since it is so light and leaves behind no buildup which is a huge plus for me since I regularly use remover to quickly change up my clients looks. Also, it didn't take more than a few swipes to remove layers of shadow, eyeshadow primer and foundation unlike some of the cheaper removers.

Dr. Hauschka is a premier holistic company that only produces natural products with quality ingredients that looks like it may be a winner for other ladies that believe in embracing nature into your beauty regimen.

Overall, I give this product a B+ and say, GLAM IT and I can't wait to try more from this company.

Other Dr. Hauschka Products I  Want To Try:

If anyone else has used the Cleansing Milk or any other product from this line, please leave your comments and feedback because different ladies will have different results. Toodles!
