Skin Care NO NO's

I was wandering around on the internet and ran across a few blogs that were pretty decent when it came to hair advice but their skincare advice had me like Oh-Em-Gee..Double U-Tee-Eff…(yea, they had me speakin IM..lol)

Make-up is my passion so I cringe at a lot of the misguided ideas that some have about skin care. I’m sure I don’t know everything and that someone with more knowledge or experience may find a technique or notion of mine to frown upon as well. That’s fine with me. I’m constantly learning more and more about my craft but I think it is our responsibility as bloggers to do proper research before we give advice. And with that being said..lets get into the good stuff..

Vaseline Should Only Be Put On Your Face If Beating Someone Down

Diva's shouldn't fight but if you have to, slap on some vaseline, toss your stilettos and get to rockin..lol But other than that, its a HUGE no no.

I saw a few popular hair and beauty blogs advising and recommending applying vaseline/petroleum jelly to your face at different stages in your regimen. Vaseline is a by product of crude oil production. The skin does not absorb it and the proper use of it on skin is to seal a wound to prevent infection. A blogger recommended slathering some on before bed and said that it would prevent aging…Uhh..NO BOO BOO! Since it sits on top of the skin and seals it, it prevents your skin from the essential tasks of excreting oxygen, waste and oils which also clogs your pores which actually speeds up the aging process because the skin isn’t allowed to do its own nightly rejuvenation.

Only Apply Alcohol To Your Face If You Lose the Aforementioned Fight

Ok, so the chick was stronger than you thought. Clean yourself up, put some alcohol on that cut and next time keep a cool head..lol.. This is the only situation where Isopropyl Alcohol should be applied to face. Many women apply it to oily or broken out areas to dry it out but alcohol will make your skin overly dry and actually worsen or promote more breakouts and scarring (or pimple marks). Instead, use Witch Hazel or a mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) diluted with water or Green Tea. These will rid skin of extra oil and debris while keeping it smooth and soft.

Don’t Be Poppin’ It Unless You’re at The Club

And even then, use discretion. Popping pimples is like ripping the scab off a sore. It will interrupt the natural healing process and result in a hideous dark spot or scar. Instead, apply some Tea Tree Oil or toothpaste and don’t agitate with heavy scrubbing or extra cleansing.

Black Don’t Crack..But It Does Burn

Somehow over the years, we african-americans have gotten the notion that our darker skin, prevents us from getting sunburn or skin cancer. This misconception is actually the reason why just as many blacks as whites get skin cancer, yet blacks have a higher rate of death from it than whites. We assume that we don’t have to worry about it so we don’t protect ourselves or get checked for it regularly so when we find out we do have it, its too late. Also, regular sun exposure will darken dark spots, make skin drier as well as speed up aging. Prevent this by incorporating a simple sunblock into your regimen and/or wearing foundation or tinted moisturizers with built in SPF. Your skin will stay younger longer as well as have a healthier, year round glow. Not doing this is a definite NO NO.

I hope you strip these no no’s from your routine and those of you who were never guilty of them *hi five*..lol..Replacing these beauty crimes with the recommendations I supplied will be a breath of fresh air for your skin (literally if you were a vaseline offender). Keep an eye out for more great skin tips and don't forget to comment and spread the word. This blog is very new and so I need you to help us grow.
