10 Tips to Transform Your Hair

I asked my Twitter Tweeps and FB Fiends to submit beauty and hair questions that they would like me to answer. Most of the questions I got were asking what my top tips are or what can be done to achieve healthy hair. There are many small changes and additions that can completely transform your hair. The ones listed are the ones I implement therefore, I know it works.

1. Get to know your hair by skipping some salon visits and taking on the task of managing your own locks.

I've met some ladies that didn't even know they were curly because they never washed their hair at home.

2. Join hair care sites, forums or blogs *like mine : )*

They have a wealth of information and can teach you so much about your hair. Long Hair Care Forum and Black Hair Media are my faves. *waves at fellow LHCers and BHMers*.

3. Get a hair regimen and keep up with your progress via photos and/or a hair journal.

Learn what works best your hair and schedule and create a weekly and monthy plan for what products you will use, how often you will shampoo/condition/deep condition, your styling process as well as morning and night time maintenance. I know it sound tedious but it really isn't at all. For example:Once a month, I deep condition with a reconstructing/protein product. Once or twice a week, I pre-poo my hair with oils and honey, then shampoo or co-wash. I'll be posting my regimen in full detail soon so keep an eye out for it.

4. Experiment with different techniques and products.

You never know what will be the catalyst for your hair's improvement. For years, I avoided trying pure honey in my hair because I thought it was icky and messy. When I finally tried it a few months ago, I was sprung. I wish I had added it to my arsenal sooner. Which brings me to my next one....

5. Adopt at least one natural/organic item into your hair regimen.

Popular ones are eggs, milk, honey, mayonnaise, olive oil, castor oil, jojoba oil, coconut or shea butter oil, coconut milk, lemon and lime. These are just a few of your infinite choices so choose one or all and your hair (and your boo) will thank you for it.

6. Ditch the regular old shampoo and conditioning routine.

Either add a pre-poo treatment to prepare your hair for the harsh detergents in shampoo or simply cut shampooing all together and wash with conditioner (co-wash). Your hair will get just as clean with a co-wash and your hair will be noticeably softer and hydrated. Try to use a moisturizing, light conditioner like Herbal Essences Hello Hydration or Aussie Moist. If you want to co-wash but just can't shake your fave shampoo, then alternate between them (maybe shampooing one week and co-washing the next).

7. Don't smother your scalp with grease or heavy oils.

The cleaner your scalp is, the more healthy. The more healthy your scalp, the faster your hair growth. This also means washing your hair as often as possible to clear debris and oils.

8. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize.

I recommend using a product like organic 100% Pure Shea Butter, Elasta QP's Mango Butter or Mizani's Butter Rich on your ends every night or as needed and then sealing with a light oil like Cantu Shea Butter No Drip or a dab of Hot Six Oil. If you are lazy like me, have fine hair that gets weighed down easily or rock you hair in a wrap then check out Soft and Beautiful Ultimate Style Protect Nighttime Dry Wrap Mousse.

9. Drink plenty of water and eat well.

If the cookies and Starbucks seem to call your name then start taking a multi-vitamin for hair and nails or a regular old Centrum A-Z.

10. Last but not least...LAY OFF THE HEAT AND CHEMICALS.

Heat breaks down the chemical bonds in your hair, thus making it weaker. If you are relaxed or chemically treated then you hair is already weakened and vulnerable so excessive heat is a no no. Try replacing heat styling with pin curls, air dried roller sets, natural styles (twists, braid-outs) or even weave or my fave, lace wigs. There are natural and effective alternatives to relaxers, hair coloring and many more chemical treatments. Do your research and try it. I promise you will see less breakage and split ends, therefore longer, healthier hair.

I hope these tips were helpful. They have all helped me to achieve my hair goals as well as helped many friends and relatives of mine. I kept them simple so you won't have any excuses not to have healthy, gorgeous hair.

I have to say this site/blog is very informative. My question : Is jet black dye harsh on your hair versus color dyes? What styles can you do on natural hair, besides flatironing?

Thanks Hun!
To answer your questions:
Any type of permanent hair color/dye is damaging. Jet black isn't any more damaging than any other unless your hair is already heat or chemically processed (relaxed, texturized or colored). All dyes have a chemical (para-phenylenediamine) which is pretty harsh and can cause you to progressively become allergic to it after using it regularly.
Black dyes just tend to be a hassle for some because it is pretty tough to change, lighten or strip and is safest if you just let the color grow out. There are natural alternatives to dark dyes like henna and indigo, regular or black walnuts and more. I will be sure to do a post with some natural alternatives to chemicals so keep a look out.
There are a lot of different styles for natural hair. Instead of flat ironing, you can learn to do at home blow outs, roller sets, twists, braid outs, wash and gos...The opportunity for fabulousness is endless. Learn your hair and experiment.

First stop washing your hair. This be done on regular basis as hair easily catches dirt as you go along with day. Depending on hair type, you either apply shampoo everyday, or try not to use it everyday as over washing also damage hair. On days you can't use shampoo, you always use conditioner to moisturize your tresses.
